3 Reasons NOT To Watch 50 Shades Of Grey

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner Hollywood is taking full advantage. The new movie, 50 Shades Of Grey is coming out the day before and people will be lined up to be the first to see it. It is the day to watch a “chick flick”, after all. The Loft (which is very similar) comes out this week as well.

For those who don’t know what 50 Shades Of Grey (also referred to as FSOG) is, lucky you. But, here is the run down in case you are interested. FSOG was first a novel by British author E. L. James. Hollywood decided that the book was so popular it should be made into a movie. In FSOG, a young woman interviews a millionaire (who happens to be extremely handsome and single). One thing leads to another and they end up “together”. I say that loosely because it is more about a contract to have sex a certain way. I will spare you the dirty details.

The main characters are Anastasia and Christian. Anastasia is an innocent girl who is seduced by Christian. Christian is into some serious stuff including dominance and submission, etc. Women are reading this book and handing on to every single word. Now with the movie coming out there will be actual images to go along with the words.

3 Reasons NOT To Watch 50 Shades Of Grey:

1. It Is Porn~

It is not entertainment. FSOG romanticizes sexual violence and makes the viewer/reader feel good about hurting others. Pornography addiction is more addictive than crack cocaine. The visuals are in your mind for life. Think about it this way: would you want to sit and watch this movie with Jesus sitting next to you? Would you be comfortable with that? Do you think Jesus would think it was just a movie? I don’t think so.

“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God…”

-1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 (NIV)

2. It Brings An Unhealthy Perspective To Sex~

Sex is a good thing. It is a wonderful thing when shared between a husband and wife. It is a blessing that can bring forth so much joy. Sex and marriage were created by God to glorify God. FSOG does not glorify God. When we put false images and scenarios in our minds, it sets us up for great disappointment. God will not bless something that is sinful. The bible tells us to glorify God with our bodies:

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

-1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV)

3. It Promotes Domestic Violence~

A study was done by Michigan State University and Ohio State University analyzing the characters in the novel. It concluded that FSOG‘s characters’ behaviors are consistent with the CDC’s official definition of intimate partner violence and that the book perpetuates dangerous abuse patterns. The study also concluded that violence occurred in nearly every interaction between the two main characters.

Did you hear that? Violence is in almost every scene. Our nation has pushed hard against domestic violence but we are willing to pay big money to go and watch it on the big screen. Does that scream hypocrite or what?? Sexual violence is a dangerous thing. It opens up a world of extremely sinful and threatening behavior.

“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, and I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

-Galatians 5:19-21 (NIV)

I urge each of you to consider the cost of going to see a movie such as 50 Shades Of Grey or The Loft. Consider the cost to your soul, to your mind, to your marriage. If it seems like a bad idea…it probably is. That little voice that is telling you to run far away from this movie is the Holy Spirit. Listen to Him. He will not lead you astray (read Psalm 23 to feel closer to God in this area.)

Before I close I would like to refer anyone who is second guessing the FSOG series of books or movie to a wonderful website. It is pullingbacktheshades.com. Pulling Back The Shades is not only a website but also a book written by Dr. Juli Slattery and Dannah Gresh. Instead of getting Christian Grey’s perspective on sex, learn what God has to say about it. Learn more about biblical sex and what that means to real Christians. There is no judgement at all if you have read the books, etc. But, you can trade in your FSOG book and they will send you Pulling Back The Shades. Go to their website between February 1-14 to get more details.

“But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with he in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28, NIV)
